Hello, obviously this is my first real post on the blog, recently I have gotten back into my trance of succumbing to trans-humanistic cyborg-ism, I feel more inclined to discuss this rather than anything else at the moment.

What is trans-humanism?

Strip the sci-fi slop off the word and it's basically an engineering position. The human body is a first draft. Evolution optimized it for surviving and reproducing on the savanna, not for thinking clearly or living long or anything I'd sit down and actually choose to value. Transhumanism is just the position that the draft isn't final. Prosthetics, neural interfaces, gene editing, life extension, all of it is the same claim stated in different materials: the limits on the human platform are contingent, and contingent limits get fixed once you have the tools to fix them.

Why is this ideal?

Because the alternative is deferring to an unoptimized system purely out of habit. I don't treat the body as sacred. I treat function as sacred. A knee that gives out at sixty is a design flaw, not something owed reverence. If a part can be replaced with one that fails less and degrades predictably, sentimental attachment to the original part is just friction. This comes from caring about what the body is for, not from caring less about the body. I just won't let nostalgia block an upgrade path.

The architectural style of trans-humanistic cyborgism

This is where it stops being abstract for me. If the body becomes an engineered system, it should look like one. No cosmetic skin stretched over the mechanism to make it palatable, that's the same dishonesty as a building with a decorative facade bolted onto a steel frame it's pretending not to have. Brutalism got one thing right that most product design gets wrong: show the load bearing structure. A prosthetic shouldn't apologize for being a prosthetic with silicone and paint. Exposed joints, visible fasteners, matte functional surfaces, materials picked for behavior under stress instead of for how they photograph. Ornament is a lie about what the thing actually is, and the aesthetic of augmentation should show its own engineering instead of hiding it as biology.

Cost

This is the biggest bottleneck. None of this is cheap, and the current market prices augmentation as either luxury or last resort medical necessity, nothing in between. I think that's a temporary condition of an immature industry rather than a permanent ceiling, the same was true of computing, and cost curves for anything manufacturable tend to fall once demand isn't purely reactive.

Societal impact

The net effect is positive. Every major technology started as an expensive edge for whoever could afford it first and diffused downward from there, computers, antibiotics, cheap calorie dense food, all live on same curve. First augmentation raises the ceiling, but a higher ceiling pulls the whole system up with it. The augmented outcompete on cognition and output, and that pressure is exactly what forces the cost curve down and the technology into commodity reach. A rule based system needs the incentive structure pointed at improvement, and a purchasable edge is precisely that incentive. The floor moves because the ceiling moved.

Futurism

I don't like this format because it turns this into an aesthetic rather than a possibility. Extrapolating here, it's a redefinition of what counts as the substrate at all. Neural interface bandwidth increases, biological components get swapped for maintainable ones piecemeal, and at some threshold the question of whether it's still the same person stops being a hard question and becomes a category error. Identity was never in the meat to begin with, it was in the continuity of the pattern. I really don't find this unsettling at all. I find the current arrangement, where a person's entire cognitive and physical continuity is hostage to the failure rate of unreplaceable organic parts worse.

Conclusion

I don't actually approach this coldly, whatever the rest of this post sounds like. There's something romantic in it for me: the idea that the shape I was born into isn't the final word on what I am, that the failure modes built into this body aren't a sentence I have to sit out. The systems problem framing, cost and sequencing matter, but underneath the engineering language is just wanting more say over what I am than biology handed me by default. Build the replacement parts honestly.
